Why not record your own voice?

The FTC warns that a scammer cloning a voice needs only “a short audio clip” of it, which can come from anything posted online.

The FBI advises: “If possible, limit online content of your image or voice.” A voicemail greeting is a recording of your voice that anyone can hear by calling you.

The voices here are AI voices, so the greeting says your name without carrying your voice. The FBI also suggests a secret word or phrase your family can use to check a call.

How do I set it as my voicemail greeting?

Most phones record the greeting through the microphone, so play the MP3 close to the phone while it records. Business phone systems usually take the file itself.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Phone app. In the unified layout, tap Calls, tap Edit, then Edit Voicemail Greeting. In the classic layout, tap Voicemail, then Greeting.
  2. Tap Custom, then Record.
  3. Play the MP3 from your computer or another phone, close to the iPhone, until it ends. Tap Stop, listen, then Save.

  2. No greeting setting? Hold the 1 key to call your voicemail and pick the greeting option in its menu.
  3. Start recording, play the MP3 close to the phone, then save it.

Any phone company’s voicemail

  1. Call your voicemail: hold 1, or dial your own number and press the key it asks for.
  2. Go to the greeting option, usually under personal options or settings.
  3. When it says to record, play the MP3 close to the phone, then press the key to save.

Google Voice and business phone systems

  1. Google Voice: open Settings, then Voicemail greeting, Record a greeting, and play the MP3 while it records.
  2. Most business phone systems take an audio file: look for Upload in the greeting settings and choose the MP3.

Questions about the greeting

Is the voicemail greeting generator free?
Yes. The text and the MP3 are free, with no sign-up. There’s a daily limit on audio so it stays free for everyone; the text always works.
Is my text saved?
No. The text is sent once to make the audio and isn’t saved or logged. The finished audio is kept in memory for a few hours, so the same request plays at once, then it’s gone.
Why not record my own voice?
A voicemail greeting is your voice, available to anyone who calls. The FTC warns that a short clip is enough to clone a voice, and the FBI advises limiting recordings of your voice online.
Can I use it for my business?
Yes. Pick Business, type the business name, and change any word. Many business phone systems let you upload the MP3 directly.
How long should a voicemail greeting be?
Short: name, that you can’t answer, and what to leave. The tool takes up to 400 characters, about 25 seconds spoken.
What does “My AI will call back” mean?
It tells callers an AI will return the call. Use it if you have something that does that, such as Vicem.

Or let Vicem answer instead

A greeting still ends at a beep. Vicem picks up instead, says it’s an AI, and takes the message in 37 languages, then tells you.
