How to dial it
**62*
- Open the keypad. Open your Phone app and go to the keypad, as if to make a call.
- Type **62*, the number and #. Type **62*, then the number, then #. Type the number with + and its country code (+447700900123 for a UK mobile). In the US, type 1 and the 10-digit number (12125550100); in Canada, the 10 digits (4165550100).
- Press call. Your network answers in a few seconds with a message on the screen saying it worked.

More about **62*
- Does **62* work on my network?
- It works on GSM-standard mobile networks, which is most phone companies in the world, including AT&T and T-Mobile in the US, every UK network and most of Europe, Canada, Australia, India (not Jio) and Latin America. Verizon and the brands on its network use their own codes instead (*72, *71 and *73), Jio uses its own (*413 turns forwarding off), and Google Fi has no codes at all. It works the same on iPhone and Android: the phone sends the code to your network.
- What happens to my voicemail?
- On many networks your voicemail is itself a forward of the calls you miss (to the voicemail number). Setting a phone-off forward replaces it, so those calls go to the new number instead of voicemail. Turn the forward off and voicemail answers again; if it doesn’t, set voicemail up again in your phone’s settings or ask your phone company.
- How do I check it worked?
- Dial *#62#: it should show the number. ##62# turns it off.
- Is it safe to dial a forwarding code someone sent me?
- Only if you typed the number in it yourself. A forwarding code sends your calls to the number inside it, so a stranger who asks you to dial one, by phone or text, gets your calls, including the ones that read out bank and login codes. If you dialed one, turn that forward off with its own code (##21#, ##67#, ##61# or ##62#). If you don’t know which one it was, ##002# turns every forward off at once, but it turns voicemail off too on many networks, so afterwards set voicemail up again in your phone’s voicemail settings or ask your phone company to turn it back on.
- Does it work on iPhone?
- Yes. These codes go to your phone company’s network, not to the phone, so they work the same on iPhone, Android and basic phones on a GSM-standard network.
